What's the plan, Stan?

As Camp GLOW draws ever nearer plans are being finalized for how the week will run. Every day the campers will participate in activities that teach them Life-skills, Income Generation, Teamwork, and Healthy Living.  Also, each of the five days has a theme which all of the day's activities will follow. These themes are broad and are the keystones to bridging the girls from what they've heard they're capable of and what they know they're capable of.

Monday - Glowing with Self-Esteem
  • Lifeskills - Self Esteem
  • IGA - Tie Dye
  • Teamwork - Communication Skills
  • Healthy Living - Nutrition

Tuesday - Glowing with Teamwork
  • Lifeskills - Gender Roles
  • IGA - R.U.M.P.S
  • Teamwork - Islands
  • Healthy Living - Taking Care of Your Bodies

GLOWing in Uganda

As Peace Corps Volunteers, we live mostly in rural areas and spend a lot of time integrating into our communities.  Our neighbors and friends are the women we work with, the shopkeeper who sells us eggs, and the children who sit on our stoop and color in the afternoons.  This level of integration is so important because it lets us see what the real needs of our communities are, and more importantly, what assets they already have in place to meet those needs.  We are able to pick apart the challenges and figure out how to address them. This is something that PCVs pride themselves on and what we believe sets us apart from other volunteer organizations.

Below is part of the project outline written to explain why we need Camp GLOW in Uganda.  This is the heart and soul of why we are here serving, and why we asked for your help.  It describes the goals we have set for the week and how we will determine if we are successful.  It lays out a groundwork for change that goes deeper than just a week of having fun.  Please take a few minutes to read it, and maybe catch a glimpse of not only what these girls are going through, but what an incredible difference a few simple changes can make in their lives.

Welcome!

This blog is being set up to share all of the stories and successes for this year's National Camp GLOW in Uganda.  While things are still in the planning phase, both PCVs and campers all over the country are anticipating the five days that will be spent empowering girls to take on new challenges, making new friends, and learning skills that will enable them to make amazing choices in their lives.  Camp GLOW is only 24 days away so all the staff and counselors (and especially our INCREDIBLE directors Chelsea and Leah!) are busy making sure the week will go off without a hitch.

We know that many people around the world have donated funds to this project, so we want to show you exactly how you are helping the girls of Uganda with your generosity. This blog will serve as a hub for pictures, videos, and updates that we want to share with you.  Please check back frequently as we'll continue to build a wealth of information, and definitely feel free to leave comments or questions and we will be sure to answer them!

Thank you!
